Bipartisan Introduction of New Hong Kong Resolution

On March 15, U.S. Senators Jim Risch (R-ID) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) introduced a non-binding resolution condemning the Chinese Communist Party’s destruction of Hong Kong’s democratic institutions and rule of law. The resolution received bipartisan support from 38 other senators, including longtime allies of Hong Kong’s democracy movement such as Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Marco Rubio (R-FL).

The Senate resolution includes a key provision condemning the Hong Kong government’s recent publicity campaigns, especially the ones aimed at reassuring international corporations of Hong Kong’s competitiveness as a global business hub. HKDC released a report in October 2022, documenting why business in Hong Kong was not as usual.

Our executive director, Anna Kwok, shared her thoughts with Radio Free Asia on the Hong Kong resolution.
